New Delhi: Charging that the SP government has completely failed in taking action against those responsible for the Muzaffarnagar violence, BSP chief Mayawati on Friday demanded imposition of President's Rule in UP.

Mayawati, who met President Pranab Mukherjee and submitted a memorandum in this regard, said ever since the Samajwati Party has come to power, the law and order situation has worsened in Uttar Pradesh and there is a "jungle raj" prevailing there.

Several dozen cases of communal incidents have also been reported from several parts of the state and the Muzaffarnagar violence is a glaring example of this, she charged. "Therefore, keeping the overall interest of people in mind, President's rule should be imposed in the state by invoking Article 356 of the Constitution," she told reporters outside Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Mayawati claimed the SP government has completely failed in taking action against those responsible for the Muzaffarnagar violence. "Not only this, it has failed in reposing confidence among the displaced people who are not yet ready to get back to their homes," she said.

She charged that the state government was playing politics over the Muzaffarnagar violence and arresting leaders from BJP and BSP in the name of inciting violence. "However, the state government is yet to arrest Muslim leaders of Congress and SP who had also participated in the mahapanchayat meeting along with BSP leaders," she said.
