His son said no deals were brokered between Nawaz and Musharraf.

New Delhi: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is expected to return to Pakistan on Sunday evening.

His son, Hassan, in an exclusive telephonic interview to CNN-IBN, stated that Sharif, his wife Kulsoom and his brother Shahbaz would file nominations for the general elections slated for January 8.

“He (Nawaz Sharif) is a Pakistani national,” said Hassan Sharif, “so there is no reason for him to be stopped from contesting elections.”

Hassan categorically denied all rumours that his father had brokered any sort of deals with President Pervez Musharraf.

King Abdullah has been helping Nawaz Sharif because he wants stability in Pakistan, said Hassan, adding that the king offered a bulletproof car to his father because of the security situation in the country, clarifying that it was not because Nawaz Sharif had asked for it.

“They (the Saudis) have made it very, very clear to General Musharraf that he should not send them back again,” said Hassan.

Nawaz Sharif has been in talks with Benazir Bhutto, trying to work together for returning democracy and the media in Pakistan.

He has also promised President Musharraf that he would neither try to destabilize the Pakistani regime, nor boycott the elections.

Hassan said that security is the prime concern when his father lands in Pakistan, obliquely referencing the suicide blasts that occurred at Benazir Bhutto's homecoming rally killing dozens of people.

Five thousand security personnel have been deployed to receive the former Prime Minister and only senior party leaders would receive Sharif at the airport.
