CHENNAI: For these Central Government babus, the long wait to live in their dream homes, is a distant dream as the Central Government Employees Welfare Housing Organisation (CGWEHO) which had promised delivery by June 2009 has failed to complete construction of the houses at Paruthipattu in Poonamallee-Avadi High Road.Embittered, around 100 allottees, on Thursday, staged a day-long fast in front of this property, expressing their disillusionment. CGWEHO is a body functioning under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation and offers this housing scheme to employees of Central Government, PSUs, Banks and also State Government employees. At Paruthipattu about 572 allotments were made to babus of whom 40 per cent are retired.Sivakumar one of the allottees said, “This scheme was announced in 2005 and by the end of 2006 all of us had paid 90 per cent of the construction cost through the requisite instalments. As per the brochure of the scheme, the houses should have been handed over to us in June 2009. Even after multiple representations to the Ministry and CGWEHO, they are taking their own sweet time to complete the construction and hand over the houses to the allottees.”The Ministry and CGWEHO say that due to heavy rains the project completion has been delayed. When the construction began, the property was priced at `900 per square feet, but later the price was hiked to `1350 per square feet. Sivakumar said, “They did not tell us why they suddenly hiked the prices, still we all paid the money, without any dues.”
