OZ Open: Sania breezes into Round II
India's Sania Mirza is through to the second round of the Australian Open after beating Olga Savchuk in straight sets.

New Delhi: She started the year moving up 13 places in the WTA rankings. And Sania Mirza has lived up to that by sailing through to the second round of the Australian Open by beating her opponent from Ukraine.

The start to a new year could not have been better. After a good performance at the Moorila International in Hobart, Sania Mirza has taken the momentum on to the Melbourne Park.

Playing her first round match against Olga Savchuk, Sania displayed some good tennis to enter Round II of the first Grand Slam this year.

The first set did not see the world number 53 in any trouble. Sania took the set 6-3. And the heat was getting to the Ukranian Savchuk.

But the Hyderabadi made heavy weather of a no-contest by letting her 19-year-old opponent take control in the second set.

Within minutes that saw a flurry of unforced errors from Sania, Olga went 5-3 up.

Sania got back into the set after that, winning the next four games on the trot to win her first Grand Slam match of 2007.

The best performance at Melbourne Park by Sania Mirza has been in 2005 when she reached the third round.

Sania will face Japan's Aiko Nakamura in the second round. The two have clashed previously in the Japan Open two years ago, and Sania had won that encounter.
