More than 5,000 activists of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) took out a rally in the city on Friday protesting against the release of 9,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
ACP (Law and Order) Suneel Kumar said the rally was peaceful and no untoward incidents were reported in any part of the city.
The rally started from National High School Grounds in Basavanagudi and culminated at the Freedom Park.
Kannada actor Ambareesh and Adichunchanagiri Mutt seer Balagangadharanatha Swamiji inaugurated the rally by beating drums.
Addressing the gathering, Ambareesh said, “After directing Karnataka to release water to Tamil Nadu, the PM has sent a team to examine the situation in the state.
By the time the Central team collects information and reports back to him, most of the water from the dams in the state would have flown to Tamil Nadu.” Extending his support to the protests, Ambareesh said there was no hidden political agenda for joining hands with the protesters.
KRV President T A Narayana Gowda gave oneday deadline to the Union Government to reconsider its decision to release water to TN.
He announced that KRV activists would take up revolutionary protests by targeting the Central government offices in the state.
The protest rally which left Basavanagudi at about 12.40 pm, passed via Sajjan Rao Circle, JC Road, Hudson Circle, Corporation Circle, Mysore Bank Circle, and converged at Freedom Park around 3 pm.
The protesters had planned to lay siege to Raj Bhavan, but were prevented by the police.
