Shimla: Railway Minister Lalu Prasad on Saturday strongly defended quota for OBCs in higher educational institutions and described the ongoing agitation against reservation as "uncalled for".

Talking to reporters after inaugurating a computerised railway reservation centre, Lalu said that the interests of all sections of the students would be protected and seats for general categories would remain unchanged.

He said though the UPA government had made it clear that seats would be increased in the institutions, some people were creating confusion.

"Reservation will be implemented and agitation on this issue will not be allowed," he said adding the OBCs had remained neglected for years and if they were getting justice, "Why anyone should have any objection?".

When asked if the reservation would create a caste divide, he said the caste-division alreay 'existed' in the society, but it would not be sharpened by reservation to OBCs.

When asked about reservation to upper class poor, he said that merit would not be ignored and every section would get justice.

What's your reaction?
