Barmer: Scorching heat coupled with water crisis has made life very difficult for people in Rajasthan. In at least 24 many cities and towns of the state including Barmer, Jalore, Makrana, Rajgarh, Balotra water is being supplied only once in four days.
In many places including Barmer people are keeping drinking water locked. The crisis has led to clashes and divided the people.
Camels are being used to pull water tankers instead of ferrying people. At every boring well in the state rows of camels with water tanks are seen.
The water crisis is so severe in the villages on the India-Pakistan border that people have been divided along communal lines. Different communities have captured water tankers in their areas and don't allow people from the other communities to take water for it.
Hari Singh Rathore, a Barmer resident, said that water shortage has forced them to buy it on loan or credit. He added that tanks in the area have been locked to prevent theft of water. Jalam Singh, former MLA of Sheo in Barmer district, said border villages are facing severe drought and water scarcity. According to him people have been forced to buy water after selling their jewellery.
In many cities including Barmer, Jalore, Makrana, Rajgarh, Balotra people are getting water only once every 96 hours. However, government has claimed that almost 2,000 tankers are being used to supply water in these areas and cities. Water Department official OP Vyas said that water scarcity has increased as there has been no rain in the affected areas.
