Singh was prevented from entering violence-hit Greater Noida.

Noida: BJP President Rajnath Singh was on Thursday taken into custody by Uttar Pradesh Police while trying to enter Greater Noida where four persons were killed in police firing.

Agitating farmers on Wednesday were demanding enhanced compensation for their acquired land.

"Singh was prevented from going towards Greater Noida and taken into custody," Gautam Budh Nagar District Magistrate S K Sharma told PTI.

A senior police official said the administration prevented the BJP chief from entering the area because it feared that his visit may create trouble.

Four persons were killed and 50 injured, including 15 policemen, in police firing and clashes after the farmers' agitation near Greater Noida Development Authority office turned violent.

The farmers were demanding enhanced compensation for their land acquired in 2003 and 2005 by the Uttar Pradesh government.

Security personnel resorted to lathicharge and lobbed teargas shells to rein in the mob and as violence continued, police had to open fire, a senior police official said.
