The issue of law and order in Uttar Pradesh on Monday generated heat in Lok Sabha with a BJP member alleging increased incidents of rape, murder and dacoities in the state and Samajwadi Party members protesting her remarks.
As Speaker Sumitra Mahajan asked first-time MP Niranjan Jyoti to stop her speech saying law and order was a state subject, SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav accused the BJP of spreading untruths.
"The law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh has been deteriorating over the days. Murders, dacoities and rape incidents have been on the rise," Jyoti said during Zero Hour, with SP members springing to their feet protesting her remarks.
As Jyoti sought a discussion on the issue, the SP chief told the Speaker that the Union Home Ministry was aware of the "facts" relating to UP and BJP should "stop spreading falsehoods and speaking untruths."
The Speaker said she had already told Jyoti, a new member, that it was a state subject she was raising.
