The Kerala Self-Financing Engineering College Managements’ Association has decided to fill 50 per cent of the government seats on their own. The admission to the same will be based on the entrance examinations held by the state and at the all-India level, from the next academic year onwards.
At a press conference held here on Monday, the association heads said that the Entrance Commissioner’s allotment procedure is causing immense delay in admission and leading to an increasing number of vacancies. The new process will also pave the way for the students from other states to gain admission to the 114 colleges across the state.
This year 9,000 government seats have been left vacant and the allotment procedures are yet to be completed. As a consequence, a large number of students have joined college in other states by paying exorbitant fees.
The candidates should apply for the options to the colleges that they desire to join and a list will be prepared by each college as per the entrance examination list. The selection will be made as per the guidelines laid down by the association and the AICTE.
Those students who obtain a better option at another self-financing or government college will be given a 10-day time limit to make a decision. The fee will not be refunded afterwards. However, the fees for the government and the management seats have not been fixed.
The other resolutions are on filling 50 per cent management seats based on the AICTE academic eligibility norms and the inclusion of all self-financing colleges in ambit of the technical University to be constituted.
So far only the government colleges and a few self-financing colleges have been considered.
A majority of the tuition fee-waiver seats, meant to help needy students, have not been filled. The reservation norms for the SC, ST and OEC candidates will be followed.
Further discussions will be held with the government. Association president A Younus Kunju and secretary T A Vijayan, president of the Federation of Associations of Private Unaided Professional Colleges G P C Nayar and association treasurer Punnose George were present.
