Potsdam: Captain Andriy Shevchenko cast doubt on his involvement in Ukraine's opening World Cup match against Spain in Leipzig on Wednesday.

"I'm working with the squad and I'm feeling quite good," Chelsea's new signing said after training on Saturday.

"This period is important for me as I have to work to get in better shape. Possibly not for the first match but for the ones after."

The 29-year-old former European Footballer of the Year is recovering from a knee injury he picked up playing for his former club AC Milan but came on to score as a second-half substitute in Thursday's 3-0 warm-up victory over Luxembourg.

Shevchenko looked in decent shape on Saturday in front of about 2,500 noisy fans at the Luftschiffstadion.

"It's difficult after half an hour of a friendly match to know exactly what my physical state is," he said.

"We still have time to assess things and decide together."

Coach Oleg Blokhin was equally non committal. "I can't say anything," said Blokhin.

"I want Shevchenko to be the star of the World Cup but we'll just have to see in the next few days what his physical state is."

Shevchenko said Spain were the favourites to win Group H which also includes Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.

"Spain are a great team and have a complete squad," said the captain. "They are certainly favourites for this group."
