THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:In a statement that points to the differences among the UDF partners on the govt’s development agenda, Labour Minister Shibu Baby John on Friday cast doubts on the viability of T’Puram-Kasargod high-speed rail corridor project.Speaking at the state conference of the Tax Practitioners Association, Shibu said the high-speed rail corridor would remain on paper due to its huge cost.Underlining the fact that it was not a stray comment against the policy followed by the government in which he is a minister, Shibu also questioned govt claims on the success of the just-concluded Grand Kerala Shopping Festival.“The high-speed rail corridor project will cost `1 lakh crore. Even if 85 per cent of the total cost is raised by way of loans, the state government will have to bear the 15 per cent or Rs15,000 crore,” he said.According to Shibu, the GKSF was not of any use to the state. “Many people are going for the Dubai Shopping Festival. But that kind of rush was not seen here. And I don’t think that in any house, any additional purchasing could have happened due to the GKSF,” he said.
