VELLORE: Even if the Central government hesitates to commute the capital punishment of the Rajiv case convicts, the State government has every right to commute the death sentence to lifetime, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) leader Vaiko said at the Vellore Central Prison here on Monday.Vaiko, who came out of the prison after meeting the three convicts, Perarivalan, Santhan and Murugan, said that the resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly was a welcome move.He also requested the Central government to consider the resolution and reduce the punishment. If Sonia Gandhi and her family could help reduce Nalini’s sentence to life term, why can’t they not do the same with the other three, who were also punished for the same case, he asked.About the petition filed by an advocate demanding to shift the court proceedings from Madras High Court to the Supreme Court, Vaiko noted that according to the advocate for the case, the need for the petition arose since there was chaos and disturbance from party men, supporters of convicts and activists, during the judgment on clemency petition filed by the three at the High Court. But, it was not true. People were calm and quiet praying for the three, and so, the case has to be dealt in the Madras High Court, he insisted.Talking about the local body election, he said that MDMK would contest all segments and go it alone.
