New Delhi: Students have performed miserably in Mathematics and English, if the result of Class X under Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is any indication.
"Close to 21 per cent students have failed in Mathematics followed by 19 per cent failing in English. It shows students are scared of both the subjects," CBSE Chairman Ashok Ganguly told reporters after he announced the results on Saturday.
Ganguly said that the teaching-learning process has to be improved in Mathematics. Besides, CBSE is making project and practical works mandatory for students from next year.
"We have improved the condition of laboratories in the schools. In a bid to make the syllabi more comprehensible, the National Curriculam Framework (NCF) has recommended doing away with certain topics in the textbooks," he said.
"Now the mathematics content has been made interesting. The pass rate of students in Mathematics has witnessed a slight increase in the last three to four years. While the pass rate was 74 per cent in 2002, it increased to 76 per cent in 2004 and 79 per cent this year," he added.
Interstingly, 1167 students have secured 100 out of 100 in Mathematics. Last year, 903 students had secured cent per cent marks in this subject.
According to Ganguly, attention will also be given to improving teaching and learning of English language.
