For families living in flats, the state government may not be able to change the Central Government’s decision to provide six subsidised LPG cylinders, said the officials of petroleum companies.
According to Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) officials, even though the government decided to increase the number of subsided cylinders, it is not going to make any difference to consumers living in flat complexes, owing to the centralised distribution of LPG in such complexes. “There is very little chance to change the new restriction for families living in apartments. Even if there is any relaxation, it would be difficult for gas agencies to monitor the misuse of LPG cylinders by apartments. Currently there is no system to monitor the quantity of LPG used by individuals in apartment complexes” a BPCL official said.
CREDAI state president M V Antony said that the decision to limit the number of LPG cylinders, irrespective of the number of cylinders used per apartment, is unfair. “The centralised distribution system has many advantages. The system is safer than taking individual connections for every kitchen. It also makes the gas distribution easy inside apartments,” he said.
He said the government should review the restriction in apartments. “A new system should be introduced to monitor individual LPG consumption in apartments. Thus, the major concern of the petroleum companies about misuse can be solved,” he added.
Meanwhile, Civil Supplies Minister Anoop Jacob said that the decision of the Central Government is unfair. “The decision cannot be substantiated as it affects many people living in the state. The government will convene a cabinet meeting on Tuesday to solve the issue,” he said.
