Tamil Nadu government says it will not bring in liquor prohibition

Speaking at the assembly, Minister for Electricity and Prohibition Natham R Vishwanathan said," We are not against prohibition but practically cannot implement it because it will breed anti social activities. We will strive to create awareness on evils of liquor."

The state saw a series of protest by opposition parties including the DMK demanding prohibition be implemented. The DMK, which first lifted the prohibition in 1971, has promised to shut liquor stores in the state if elected to power next year.
