BANGALORE: As the city witnessed an exponential growth over the last decade, the increase in the number of residents also brought with them a series of issues which the civic agencies are struggling to deal with, the biggest hurdle — waste management.Everyday thousands of tonnes of household waste is generated.More often than not the waste is either disposed on vacant sites or left to rot along the road sides. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) too seems to have thought of the same as they came up with the innovative concept of garbage convertors. With two plants installed in Yelahanka and Malleswaram, they planned to transport garbage from the entire city to these plants where they would be segregated. The wet waste from it would be converted into manure and sent to the horticulture department. But the flaw in the plan lies in the fact that the one of theses plants at Yelahanka seems to be in no working condition. The plant in Sandeep Unnikrishnan Road was started in 2010 with the aim of minimising the waste by recycling it and paving way for sustainable development.A total sum of Rs. 1.74 crore was spent on the project. But the plant as been closed for a while now. With no place to store manure and no working machines, one wonders why it was built in the first place as it is not presumptuous for one to wonder why the BBMP would spend a fortune on a plant just to shut it down. The door to door collection adopted by the BBMP or the waste collected by the pourakarmikas is not segregated. The process of segregation of waste into biodegradable and non-biodegradable is a labour intensive process. The organic waste recycling plant here was to solve the hassles associated with the same as machinery could satisfactorily solve the hassles of labour.A cause for the shutdown was said to be the huge electricity bills that followed suit with the plant.Another major concern about the plant is the misuse of the same by people. The expanse makes itself available to drunkards and people living in and around the area say that anti-social activities are common. The eerie location of the plant adds to the worries multifold. The Joint Commissioner for BBMP for Yelahanka seemed unaware of any such issues. All the BBMP officials that were contacted had to be enlightened about the fact that the plant has been shut down. One wonders why, despite the huge amount invested into the project and when they took up such a positive step in order to make Bangalore a cleaner city, they would give up on it without even a trial.

What's your reaction?
