Jackfruit is one of the most consumed and loved tree fruits in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. Here, people love experimenting with new recipes with jackfruit. Halasina Sukeli is the latest addition to the sweet dish made from jackfruit by the Uttar Kannada resident.

Venkataramana Hegade of Kanalli village in Sirisi town of Uttara Kannada has been preparing this sweet dish for four years. Customers are always eager to buy and taste the novel recipe from jackfruit which is also considered as an alternative to chocolates. The demand for this sweet dish increases during the rainy season.

Before the production of Halasina Sukeli, Venkataramana stores the jackfruit in a closed space for four days. The next day it is turned over and kept to dry again. During this time the heat should not exceed 60 degrees. Apart from this, Venkataramana Hegade also makes sure that the jackfruit does not turn black during the process. After four days, the jackfruit turns from yellow to light brown, ready to be consumed by the children. It gives a chocolate-like taste to the foodies.

Venkataramana Hegade said that there is no need to add any kind of special ingredient to it. No special care is needed, he added. Once the jackfruit is dried, the dish is ready. He has not brought it to the market at present but is planning to bring it in the future.

The love for jackfruit by Kannada people knows no bounds.
