Time for Calypso and Samba
Time for Calypso and Samba
Follow us:WhatsappFacebookTwitterTelegram.cls-1{fill:#4d4d4d;}.cls-2{fill:#fff;}Google NewsTeam India is in the land of Calypso and will be hoping to continue their good run in the ODIs and also extend it to the Test match arena.

With the current West Indies team just a poor shadow of the team of the 1970s and 1980s and India boasting of a good pace attack, the visitors would want to repeat the success of 1971 when they won the Test series.

West India have a new skipper in Brian Lara and with the recent succcess against Zimbabwe, their confidence will be sky high.

Lara, who is in the twilight of his career, would also want to set the records right in what is most likley to be his last test series against India.

Playing in fimiliar conditions at home would also give then the extra edge and with the next World Cup in their homeland, the Windies have all the reasons to come up with a good performance.

India will be missing their most experienced batsman, Sachin Tendulkar, in the One-Dayers but Rahul Dravid has many youngsters at his command who would be willing to stretch themselves for a win.

But with the Calypso playing in the background and a host of young players in their ranks the West Indians are sure to make life tough for Team India.

With the matches starting at around 1900 hrs IST expect to see many bleary eyed people the next morning.

However, cricket is not the only sport that will keep the world awake and tuned in to their TVs and radios.

Across the Atlantic another sporting tournament will be starting in the month of June that is sure to paralyse most of the world for the next one month.

Germany is hosting the XVIII edition of the Soccer World Cup and with one of the biggest sporting extravaganza starting, it will be a treat for all the soccer crazy fans.

All the teams in coming to the World Cup have something or the other to prove. While for the favourites it is time to show that they are still the powerhouse of soccer, for the first timers it is a chance to show that they are not in Germany to just make up the numbers.

Brazil start as the overwhelming favourites as they boast of the best attack but my personal favourites will be Argentina.

For some one whose first memories of the Soccer World Cup is related to the magician of soccer also known as Diego Armando Maradona, how can any other team be the favourite?

Despite having one of the most creative mid-fielders in their ranks, Argentina have seldom produced the kind of game in the recent past that will get them the coveted FIFA trophy.

Always living in the shadow of Brazil, and many would say rightly so, Argentina along with England, France and hosts Germany are the ones favoured to stop the Brazilians from claiming their sixth World Cup.

But to stop the Brazilians would require something magical and that quality according to me can come only from Argentina.

But can the land of Tango overshadow the Samba brigade. Or will it be someother team that will engrave their name on the trophy. We will find out on July 9.

So for the next one and a half month get ready to enjoy both the Calypso and Samba.

Goodbye sleep.
