Los Angeles: The heartwarming 1994 epic starring 'Forrest Gump' is all set to hit theatres again to coincide with its 20th anniversary.
Paramount is re-releasing the 1994 best picture Oscar winner, directed by Robert Zemeckis in Imax theatres on September 5, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The film was originally released in theatres July 6, 1994, and was a critical and commercial smash, grossing USD 677 million worldwide.
It was nominated for a whopping 13 Academy Awards and earned six trophies, including best actor for Hanks and best director for Zemeckis. The film co-stars Robin Wright, Sally Field and Gary Sinise and is based on the novel by Winston Groom.
Recent theatrical re-releases have had mixed success at the box office. 'The Lion King' netted USD 94 million domestically when it was re-released in 3D in 2011, but other efforts -- including 'Phantom Menace' in 2012 -- have not been so fortunate.
'Raiders of the Lost Ark' added an extra USD 3 million to its coffers from its 2012 Imax re-release. 'Forrest Gump' is currently ranked No 31 on the list of all-time highest domestic grosses. It stands USD 4.5 million behind 2010's 'Alice in Wonderland' at No 30.
