Two youths were arrested for allegedly killing a Chinkara, a protected animal, at Loharki village here, police said today. The accused, identified as Hazoor and Birbal, were caught and arrested yesterday for killing the endangered deer, while an accomplice, Yarookhan, managed to escape.
The accused chased the deer, about 4 years old, on a motorbike in Pokharan tehsil and attacked it with a sharp-edged weapon, police said, quoting villagers' version.
After the Chinkara was injured, the poachers hit it with weapons and stones, they added. A case under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 was registered against the accused, they said, adding, carcass of the deer has been sent for post-mortem. Chinkara (Indian gazelle) is included in the endangered species list.
