Guwahati: In an apparent bid to scuttle United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) leaders' peace initiative with the Centre, the Paresh Barua faction of the outfit on Saturday threatened to resort to "armed struggle" against the "arrogant" policies of the Congress and urged people to boycott meetings of the ruling party.
In an e-mail sent to PTI in Guwahati, ULFA Publicity in-charge Arunodoy Dohotia alleged that the Congress has always indulged in the politics of division and was now attempting to create a division within the outfit.
"The Congress has never given any importance to legitimate democratic struggles of the indigenous Assamese to protect their land and identity and neither has it taken steps to resolve the various issues of the state," he said.
The party was instead now indulging in "dirty politics of division within our outfit but this will not be tolerated and we will launch an armed protest against this arrogant policy of the Congress".
"We, therefore, appeal to all Assamese to boycott meetings organised by Congress ministers, legislators and other leaders who are now indulging in politics of enticement by distributing yarn, blankets and mosquito nets before the forthcoming assembly polls," Dohotiya said.
The threat comes against the backdrop of the Prime Minister's visit to the state.
"After exploiting the state's resources of oil, gas, tea and coal, the Congress government has now moved on to water and has laid out a red carpet welcome to outside industrialists to set up big dams on Brahmaputra and its tributaries," the statement said.
The Congress came to power twice in 2001 and 2006 on the promise of punishing those involved in secret killings but the person responsible for preparing the blueprint of the killings has been made the Chief Minister's security advisor, he alleged.
A section of the ULFA, led by its Chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa, has come forward for talks with Centre. ULFA leaders had recently held preliminary talks with the Centre in New Delhi and met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister P Chidamabaram.
