BANGALORE: In a significant development, as many as fifteen pontiffs of different Veerashaiva mutts called on Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Dr G Parameshwar at his residence and had a formal conversation with him for about 30 minutes.“It was a courtesy call; No political significance should be attached to the meeting,” Dr Parameshwar addressed the press after meeting the pontiffs here on Sunday. The head of the Rudrakshi, Nidasesi and Sulaphal mutts were among those leaders who meet the KPCC president and reportedly pleaded with Congress leaders to clear the misconception that the Congress is a party loathsome to Veerashaiva community. The meeting assumes significance, as it coincides with the Congress’ 60-day campaign against the ruling BJP government.Dr Parameshwar elucidated about the meeting: “We tried to drive home the point that the Congress gives credence to maintaining a secular image and is not against any religion or community.” He said that the pontiffs were received with all traditional honour.Former council chairman Prof B K Chandrashekhar was also present.
