HYDERABAD: In order to simplify the process to apply for adoption of children and to avail benefits of welfare schemes, the Department of Women Development and Child Welfare is all set to open Internet kiosks in a fortnight at all district collectorates. The department has been working with the Electronics Corporation of India Ltd for over a year to establish kiosks equipped with touch-screen facility and Telugu interactive voice system to help even illiterate people use the facility, said K Padmaja, assistant director (Training). The kiosks will have data related to the department's schemes like the Sabala Yojana (empowerment of out-of-school adolescent girls through supplementary nutrition and life skills training) and Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana, a conditional maternity benefit scheme."The machines with Telugu audio will help reduce public queues at offices for information on schemes, eliminate paperwork and improve efficiency. People can download applications for schemes free of cost with the help of an operator appointed by the ECIL," Padmaja said. The department had already conducted a trial run based on which minister for Women Development and Child Welfare Sunitha Laxma Reddy had suggested some changes. "Once the data is updated, we will inaugurate the kiosks," Padmaja said. However, some members of the department feel the kiosks are a waste of time and money as they are sceptical about people being able to use them. "They may not run beyond a couple of months," a senior official felt.
