New Delhi: Delhi continued to reel under massive traffic jams due to waterlogging as heavy rains lashed the city for second consecutive day on Saturday flooding several arterial roads and leaving commuters stranded for hours while exposing civic bodies' lack of preparedness to deal with the perennial problem.
Delhi recorded this season's maximum rainfall on Saturday. The MET department issued a warning on Saturday saying that heavy downpour could be expected till Tuesday.
"I don't see any respite as such in the next 48 hours.Month of July and August are rainiest months for Delhi-NCR. It's not very abnormal, during the monsoon season, having rains like this is quite common. Light rainfall for all parts of the country in the next three days can be expected," said a senior officer from the MET department.
While Municipal Corporation authorities & the deputy chief minister claim all efforts are being put in to ensure no water logging, several areas continue to be inundated. Portable pumps have been installed in many localities to pump out excess water
Heavy rains left an old age home in South Delhi's Rangpuri Pahari flooded. All residents were evacuated by Delhi government and have been safely moved to a community centre nearby.
According to a senior government official, Delhi PWD and Health Minister Satyendra Jain along with Social Welfare Minister Sandeep Kumar and AAP MLA Col. Devendra Sherawat rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation as soon as they got information about the flooding. Both ministers have been asked to submit a report on the matter to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the official said.
After shifting all inmates, Jain tweeted, "People shifted to community centre from Rangpuri Pahari old age home which is flooded . I, Sandeep & MLA are at site,(SIS)/ (sic)." AAP's Bijwasan MLA Devendra Sehrawat said teams from PWD and municipal corporations were asked to shift the residents of the old-age home.
The old-age home was recently in the news after a number of deaths were reported at the facility due to dehydration suffered by inmates in last two months.
