Remember those health drinks we used to have in our childhood that claimed to make us taller, boost our immunity and make us sharp? Well, lately, various health drinks and powders have come under the scanner due to the high sugar content in them which is harmful to the body. This has also brought to light other food items that we might assume to be nutritional but not ideal for breakfast choices for your little ones. Excessive sugar intake and artificial colouring may lead to various diseases and increase the risk of obesity, diabetes and other lifestyle diseases.

Experts suggest that everyone including children should eat unprocessed food. Parents can make homemade snacks made of whole grains, nuts seeds, or other healthy ingredients to ensure that the meal is packed with vital nutrients and minerals. In an interview with the Hindustan Times, Dr Saurabh Khanna – Lead Consultant- Paediatrics & Neonatology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram shared a few food items loaded with sugar that are harmful to children.

Packaged Fruit Juice

As per the expert, packaged fruit juices contain hidden sugar sources to make it seem like it is a healthy drink. Instead, Saurabh Khanna urges everyone to consume whole fruits and limit juice drinking.

Breakfast Cereals

Have you noticed how a majority of the breakfast cereals used eye-catching colours and effects to make them appealing to children? But, the sad reality is that these breakfast cereals have a lot of sugar in them and regular consumption can lead to detrimental health effects. Hence, make sure to read the labels and opt for whole-grain options.

Granola Bars

Granola bars are promoted as healthy snacks and claimed to be made of dried raspberries or blueberries, various seeds and nuts. However, they contain high-fructose corn syrup or other sweeteners. You can opt to make granola bars at home which will be a lot healthier.

Flavoured Yoghurts

We all know that yoghurt is great for health due to its probiotic components. But, it is important to remember that only plain yoghurts with no added flavours are good for health. Flavoured yoghurts have sugar and artificial colours in them which must be avoided. You can top plain yoghurt with fresh fruits to make the best out of your meal.

Condiments

Ketchups and other sauces too have a lot of added sugar. Either watch out for labels that emphasise natural ingredients or prepare a healthy version of it at home.

Packaged Foods

There are a few fruit and savoury snacks that include sugar but are disguised. It is best to stick to whole ingredients with the least amount of sugar.
