Hollywood stars Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling have strict rules when it comes to their daughters, Esmeralda (8) and Amanda (7): they are not allowed to use smartphones and are completely kept away from the Internet. Mendes recently shared her insights into their parenting style, highlighting her concerns about the potential negative impact of social media on young children.
In an interview with the Sunday Times, Mendes expressed her stance on internet usage for her kids, stating, “Putting my kid on the internet and being like, ‘Oh, search something,’ is equivalent to telling her, ‘Oh, just go down the street in the middle of the night. You’ll be fine.’” For her, giving children access to the internet is akin to allowing them to drink alcohol before they are ready.
Exploring the online world requires a level of maturity and her daughters need to stay away from the same for better mental health, as Eva Mendes explained in the interaction. She added that it leads to unhealthy comparisons, pressurising kids to keep up with the unrealistic lifestyles of others.
Besides limiting online exposure, Eva Mendes also keeps interacting with them about their privileged upbringing. “I explain to them what I didn’t have, what Ryan didn’t have when he was little, how hard we had to fight, the dark days of being paycheck to paycheck, and this and that, but they’ll never really know unless they experience that,” Mendes added.
Both Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling make a conscious effort to shield their daughters from the showbiz world of Hollywood, even shifting away from there to ensure that their kids are distant from celebrity lives. Reflecting on the couple’s parenting style, a source earlier told People magazine, “For them, the most important job is their girls. Everything else comes second.”
“They didn’t want the girls to grow up around other celebrity kids,” he added.
Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling have been together since 2011. Although the couple reportedly married each other in 2016, the confirmation was made only in November 2022, while speaking with an Australian news outlet at the event. As of now, Gosling is still active as an actor but Mendes took a hiatus from acting 10 years ago, prioritising her children’s well-being.
