Veteran actor Sathyaraj and Superstar Rajinikanth are set to collaborate once again for director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s upcoming movie ‘Coolie’. Despite initial rumors suggesting that Sathyaraj would portray the antagonist in the film, it has now been confirmed that the two will be depicting friends on screen. This film marks their reunion after a gap of 38 years, harking back to their shared screen time in the 1986 movie ‘Mr Bharat’. Notably, though Sathyaraj was actually four years younger than Rajinikanth, he played his father in ‘Mr Bharat’, a role that remains iconic and acclaimed to this day.
In a recent interview, a senior actor mentioned Sathyaraj’s enthusiasm about playing Rajinikanth’s friend in ‘Coolie’. The actor also disclosed his involvement in playing the antagonist in Salman Khan and AR Murugadoss’ upcoming Bollywood flick, ‘Sikandar’. While reports have hinted at Sathyaraj’s role in ‘Coolie’, an official confirmation is still pending.
It’s worth noting the historical tension between Sathyaraj and Rajinikanth, with their fans even being at odds during a previous Cauvery-related hunger strike event. Sathyaraj’s passionate speech on that occasion was interpreted by some as indirectly targeting Rajinikanth. Nonetheless, in 2022, Sathyaraj’s son, Sibiraj, has assured that all is well between his father and Rajinikanth, marking a possible reconciliation in the longstanding relationship dynamic between the two actors and their fan bases.
Lokesh Kanagaraj has worked with some of the most sought-after actors in the South Indian film industry. Latest reports suggest that Lokesh Kanagaraj has increased his remuneration for the film. It is being speculated that the director will be paid on par with some of the biggest stars in the industry.
India Herald has reported that Lokesh Kanagaraj will receive a remuneration of roughly 60 crore rupees for the film Coolie. The director was paid Rs 50 crore for his previous film Leo, claims the report.
Lokesh Kanagaraj made his debut in the Tamil cinema business with the film Managaram. He quickly achieved widespread fame and made some noteworthy films like Kaithi, Master, Vikram, and Leo.
Further, reports also suggest that Rajinikanth has charged an exorbitant fee for the film. According to Koimoi and DNA, Rajinikanth is being paid between Rs 260 and 280 crore for the film.
Meanwhile, the title teaser for Coolie was released in April. The clip began with numerous gold smugglers going over their inventory of bars, watches, jewellery, and other stuff. Soon, Rajinikanth breaks into their cave and thrashes them with their possessions.
Anirudh Ravichander has composed music for the film. The preview contains a noteworthy background score that sets the tone for what’s to come. The film is set to go on floors soon. The film also stars Prithviraj Sukumaran, Ranveer Singh, and Parvathy Thiruvothu in key roles. Produced by Sun Pictures, Coolie is expected to be released in 2025.
