A lot of effort went into creating sounds of the mythical, supernatural world of Tumbbad, from roping in the right dubbing artists to re-recording sounds till they fit just right. A lot of trial and error went into the making of the film, and sound was one such department, handled by sound designer Kunal Sharma.
Kunal was nominated in the Best Sound Category for Tumbbad, alongwith Dipankar Chaki (October), Madhur Apsara (AndhaDhun), Robert Kellough (Gali Guleiyan) and Sanjay Maurya (Manmarziyaan), at the Reel Movie Awards 2019. He was announced the winner at the ceremony held in Mumbai on Tuesday.
Adesh Prasad, the writer/co-director of Tumbbad, said in an interview that the biggest challenge during the post-production was that it was a very sound-heavy film. When Kunal started work on it, he already found the amount of effort put into the film very inspiring. The film's sound was recreated 100% because the sync sound couldn't be used at all due to the rain, etc. "The kids had grown up, so we couldn't use their voices, so we had to create everything from scratch."
This was the first film for which Kunal had mixed sound, as well as designed. He adopted both Indian as well as an international approach, making the film sound world-class but very rooted at the same time.
The film was mixed four times to finally make it all come together and translate to the audience as a whole. To create the sound of Hastar, Kunal had to mix a large number of tracks to get the voice of the demonic creature.
The efforts finally paid off, with Kunal's work being praised all over and Tumbbad being hailed as a technically sound film.
