Chennai: During his 45 year long association with the glamourous world of Hindi cinema, Mahesh Bhatt has established himself as a synonym for brilliance courtesy his bold personality, outspoken nature and above all unmatchable abilities as a storyteller.
Moreover, the veteran filmmaker has also earned the respect of fans and critics alike by very boldly highlighting various aspects of his personal life through his impressive body of work. Today, as Bhatt turns a year older, we present before you some of his most compelling big screen outings.
Manzilein Aur Bhi Hai: Bhatt’s maiden directorial venture, ‘Manzilein Aur Bhi Hai’ was decisively way ahead of its time. Featuring Kabir Bedi and Prema Naryan in lead roles, the film explored the relationship between two young men and a sex worker. Shot in 1972, it ran into trouble with Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) because of its bold theme. ‘Manzilein Aur Bhi Hai’ was ultimately released in 1974.
Zakhm: Based on the strong bond between Bhatt and his mother, ‘Zakhm’ is perhaps best remembered for its heart-wrenching climax and gripping screenplay. Featuring Pooja Bhatt and Ajay Devgn in lead roles, the film received tremendous critical acclaim and bagged the Nargis Dutt award for ‘Best Feature Film on National Integration’.
Arth: Yet another hard-hitting film based on the maverick filmmaker’s personal life, ‘Arth’ is regarded as one of the evergreen classics of Hindi cinema. Released in 1982, the film boasted of an intense performance from Shabana Azmi as well as some soulful songs. Interestingly, the success attained by ‘Arth’ helped Azmi win a National award and propel her career to greater heights.
Saaransh: The film kick started Anupam Kher long and illustrious career, ‘Saaransh’ created quite a stir amongst movie buffs and critics alike thanks to its mature performances as well as hard-hitting narrative. Touted as a drama, it explored several sensitive issues such as corruption and the loneliness associated with old age. Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahi: Loosely based on the 1934 Hollywood film ‘It Happened One Night’, this romantic-drama is perhaps best remembered for the sizzling chemistry between Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt. Featuring some popular numbers, it fared extremely well at the box office and earned rave reviews.
Sadak: One of the highest grossing Hindi film’s of the 1990’s, ‘Sadak’ is perhaps synonymous with legendary actor Sadashiv Amrapurkar’s powerful portrayal of a dreaded eunuch named ‘Maharani’. Interestingly, the film’s plot was quite similar to that of the 1976 Hollywood classic ‘Taxi Driver’ which was directed by Martin Scorsese.
Aashiqui: A blockbuster in every sense of the word, ‘Aashiqui’ catapulted Rahul Roy and Anu Aggarwal to stardom. Moreover, the stupendous success attained by its sound track helped Kumar Sanu find firm footing the industry. Interestingly, a sequel was released in 2013. But it featured an entirely different cast and was helmed by Mohit Suri.
