Netflix’s The Perfect Couple stars Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Eve Hewson, Meghann Fahy, Ishaan Khatter, Jack Reynor and Dakota Fanning. Based on Elin Hilderbrand’s 2018 novel, the limited series tells the story of a high-society wedding that goes terribly wrong. Despite the romantic seaside setting, the show takes a sinister turn as the story unfolds, revealing the dark secrets of the characters.

The series opens with one of the richest families of Nantucket, the Winburys, gearing up for the wedding of Benji (Billy Howle) with Amelia (Eve Hewson) when the bride’s best friend Merritt (Meghann Fahy) is found dead. Amelia was the first to discover her body on the beach, leaving her in shock. As the investigation begins, the entire Winbury family and the guests are suspects in this whodunnit. The murderer turned out to be the one least expected of Winbury’s eldest daughter-in-law, Abby, the pregnant wife of Benji’s elder brother, Thomas. Here are solid clues that pointed out that she was the true culprit all along, but we missed it!
ABBY SPEAKS ILL OF MERRITT
When the police call Abby to the station for a round of questioning, she starts Merritt’s character assassination, even calling her a golddigger. Given the situation, people are expected to talk about the positive aspects of a dead person, but Abby continues to say nasty things about her, an attempt to portray her in a bad light.
ABBY WASHES A GLASS AT THE SINK AFTER MERRITT’S DEATH
Abby is seen washing just one glass in the morning after the reception when Detective Henry first meets her, a behaviour totally opposite to her personality. In the series, she’s seen as someone who wouldn’t even move an inch to get yoghurt from the fridge but washes a glass that the “caterers missed”. Later, it was revealed that she used the glass to crush the barbiturates.
ABBY ASKS HER HUSBAND, THOMAS, TO CLEAN OUT HIS PILL DRAWER
Since Abby’s husband, Thomas, has a habit of stealing pills, she asks him to clear the drawer when the police start investigating their house. She does it in the fear that the detectives might find out the substance in the drawer that she used to kill Merritt.
DETECTIVES FIND TALLOW IN MERRITT’S TOXICOLOGY REPORT
One of the major clues that pointed out that Abby killed Merritt was the presence of the substance tallow in her toxicology report. This is one of the ingredients of the non-FDA-approved balm that Abby uses to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy. She also elaborates that the substance is illegal for cosmetics in the US, hinting that only she had access to it.
ABBY TRIES TO LEAVE THE ISLAND AND PACK MERRITT’s LUGGAGE
In one of the early episodes, Abby tries to leave the island where the wedding is scheduled to take place. Despite the police’s instructions, she packs her bags to leave, only to be reminded by her husband of the rules. She tells him that she has permission to leave, and the reason is a hair appointment. Meanwhile, in another episode, Abby packs Merritt’s belongings so as to make everyone move on with their lives and forget about the murder. When Amelia tries to stop her, she plays the privilege card by saying that the police won’t arrest her as she’s a white woman, too, pregnant.
