Actress Roopal Tyagi, best known for playing Gunjan in popular show ‘Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke’, is now a part of the show ‘Ranju Ki Betiyaan’.
While ‘Ranju Ki Betiyaan’ tells a story of a woman who raises her daughters all by herself, Roopal says that there are still some shows that feature regressive stories. However, she believes it is slowly changing.
“On TV right now some shows are extremely regressive and I can’t even watch those shows. But I feel like now progressive shows are taking over. Last year it wasn’t the case, they were trying to make progressive shows but backdrop was still very regressive. Now I think it is changing slowly and steadily and there are now progressive shows on TV now.”
Talking about her new show, the actress said, “I have been looking at characters for a long time now, almost 6-7 months ever since I decided to get back to TV. I wanted multiple things, one was that I wanted my character to be stronger than my previous one. Another was something that would not require 30 days of my life every month. This two was my priority and I think Bulbul was such a strong character. When I heard the character sketch about how this girl is and how she stands up for her mother. I feel this added aspect of storytelling in television is very important and I want to be part of shows like that. I think Bulbul adds that value to the society as a whole as well.”
She said that she is very different from the character that she is playing in the show. “I have never been an athlete, I have never played sports in my entire life. I have never actually fought other men and things like that. So, I have not been very physical that way but I identify with the mental strength of this girl.”
We asked Roopal if she thinks that the portrayal of women on TV has changed over the years? She said, “Women are being portrayed differently. It is very important, actually a necessity that women get portrayed differently. I feel like when a woman tells another woman’s story, it is very different. When a man portrays women on TV, there is a different angle to it. But a woman like Rashami Sharma portraying a story of five woman is different, hence a bold angle. That is why we are making more real characters on-screen. Ranju is one way, Bulbul is one way. They are different in themselves. That difference is what makes it beautiful.”
She said that when a woman’s story is being told, the show tends to just focuse on point of view of one woman. However, Ranju Ki Betiyaan is different. She said, “I believe the USP of the show is that you are not going to get just one point of view. When they say women show, it is always just the main protagonist and her point of view everywhere. A USP of show like this is that you get five different point of view from five different women.”
