Karan Johar Says No to Directing Hollywood Film but Wants to Meet Meryl Streep: 'I Could Die And...'

Karan Johar has turned down the idea of directing a Hollywood project. The filmmaker was attending the Red Sea International Film Festival 2023 over the weekend where he was presented the Variety Vanguard Award. After receiving the award, he talked about his films, shows and even touched upon the nepotism debate. During the chat, Karan was asked if he would be interested in crossing the seven seas and trying his hand at Hollywood movies. However, the filmmaker said that he isn’t keen on the idea. He is hoping that he gets to meet Meryl Streep someday.

As reported by Variety, Karan recalled that he was making frequent trips to Los Angeles after he shot My Name is Khan in the US. He also met with a few production houses but eventually realised he wants to make more Indian movies. “It took a couple of trips to Los Angeles to realize that it is all wonderful and you have a lot of meetings, but my heart is in my country and my cinema is in my heart. I don’t want to leave that. I don’t want to make films without the language that’s raised me,” he said.

“I don’t need to make an English film to [win Variety Vanguard Award.] It would be amazing to walk the Academy Awards red carpet, but I would like for it to be with a Hindi-language film,” Karan added. While Hollywood movie is not on his bucket list, he hopes to meet Meryl Streep once in his life. “It’s the only item on my bucket list. If I could have an hour with her, I could die and go to heaven. Her ability to be relevant in any decade is so admirable. The thing about relevance is that you have to evolve with the times, and there are a few artists who understand that more than others and I think she’s one of them,” he added.

Meanwhile, back home, Karan is preparing to drop a new episode of Koffee With Karan 8. The episode will feature Kiara Advani and Vicky Kaushal.
