'Not a Lot of Spots up for Grabs But...': Glenn Maxwell Hopeful of Making a Test Comeback
Glenn Maxwell last played a Test in 2017 but is hopeful of playing some role in the current WTC cycle for Australia.

Fresh from his world cup exploits, Glenn Maxwell has his eyes set on making his Australia Test comeback as he continues to pursue red-ball dream.

While Maxwell has carved a successful limited-overs career winning multiple world cups across formats, he has managed just seven Tests so far and the last of it came way back in 2017.

He has scored 339 runs at 26.07 including a century and with his offbreaks, has clinched eight wickets as well.

The 35-year-old admits there aren’t many spots up for grabs in the current Australia Test side but feels he provided a viable option when it comes to playing in the subcontinent.

“I’m quite understanding the circumstances of the current side. They’re playing some really good cricket, they’re World Test champions,” Maxwell said on Australian radio station SEN on Tuesday.

“There’s not a lot of spots up for grabs as far as Tests at home, but I know that when it does come to a sub-continent tour I can be a real viable option to hopefully fill a role in that side,” he added.

In the ongoing ICC World Test Championship cycle (2023-2025), Australia will be in Sri Lanka for the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy in 2025 and Maxwell is hopeful he can be part of the tour.

“I don’t think there’s another sub-continent tour until early 2025. So, I’ll keep trying to plug away and hopefully get an opportunity at that stage,” he said.

Australia Test stars are gearing up for the upcoming series against Pakistan at home and the build-up has been dominated by the potential retirement of David Warner.

Mitchell Johnson in an explosive column had questioned why Warner is being given a hero’s send-off despite his below-par form and role in the 2028 ball-tampering scandal.

While several current and former Australia stars have since weighed in on the controversy, Maxwell has refused to comment on it although he did call Warner ‘an absolute champion’.

“I’m not going to throw my name into some headlines about this,” Maxwell said.

“But Davey’s been an absolute champion of Australian cricket for a long period of time and the selectors were pretty clear on what they thought of it (selecting him). I’m looking forward to seeing Davey in that first Test and him making a lot of runs this summer,” he added.
