2G scam: Chidambaram must resign, says BJP
BJP leader Balbir Punj said if Chidambaram is given a clean chit by the trial court, he can return to the Cabinet.

New Delhi: With the Supreme Court leaving it to the trial court to decide on probe against Home Minister P Chidambaram in the 2G case, the BJP on Thursday demanded his resignation till the matter is settled.

"The position of Chidambaram as a minister is very vulnerable and he has no moral right to stay as a minister. Chidambaram's tenure becomes untenable following today's order," said BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad.

"The Supreme Court has refused to buy the logic of Chidambaram's lawyers. Sword still hangs on Chidambaram's head. Chidambaram and A Raja were privy to the decision making process," he said.

"The BJP wants to ask the Prime Minister that would you now to take action against Chidambaram? Will the Prime Minister continue to defend Chidambaram?" be asked.

BJP leader Balbir Punj said, "...He (Chidambaram) is fully involved in the entire scam and he has two days' reprieve. But issue of probity in public life demands that either Chidambaram puts in his papers on his own, or if he refuses to do so, the Prime Minister must recommend to the President to sack him from the government with immediate effect."

When asked whether it is premature for the party to demand the resignation of Chidambaram, who was the then Finance Minister, Punj said if he is given a clean chit by the trial court, he can return to the Union Cabinet.

Welcoming the apex court judgement, he said it has confirmed what the country knew that 2G is one of the biggest scams and all allocations made were "absolutely fraudulent and not done on merit but on other considerations."

Attacking the Government over the 2G scam, Ravi Shankar Prasad further said, "2G is the biggest scam of corruption since independence. Supreme Court has cancelled all licences. The BJP has been campaigning against this issue since 2008."

Pointing the finger towards Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the BJP spokesperson said, "The Prime Minister even gave the certificate of innocence to Raja inside and outside Parliament. The credibility of decision making process of the government stands shattered. We want the PM to respond to this, why is he silent?"

Prasad even targeted Congress President Sonia Gandhi, saying, "Sonia Gandhi is the senior most leader of the UPA, will she speak now? The BJP would like to ask Sonia Gandhi, will she now speak on the decision making process of her own government that stands shattered?"
