Imphal: Four opposition parties in Manipur have struck an alliance to field a common candidate in each of the two constituencies -- Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur -- in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
The Manipur People's Party (MPP), the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), the Manipur State Congress Party (MSCP) and the National People's Party (NPP) will nominate former Manipur University Professor N Mohendro from Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat as their common candidate, a spokesman for the MPP said.
Mohendro, a well-known economist in the state, is a senior leader of the MPP.
The MPP spokesman said senior leader of NCP L B Sona will be the common candidate of the four parties in the outer Manipur constituency.
While voting in outer Manipur parliamentry constituency (hill districts) will be held on April 16, election to the inner Manipur seat (valley districts) will be held on April 22, official sources said.
Sources in the Manipur unit of the BJP said party's central leaderships had earlier announced that former Chief Minister W Nipamacha Singh would be the party's candidate in the inner Manipur parliamentary constituency.
The BJP candidate for the outer Manipur parliamentary constituency would be announced after consultation with "like-minded parties".
The ruling Congress is yet to announce its candidates for the two parliamentary constituencies in the state. Party sources said 13 names have been forwarded to the central leaderships for the two constituencies.
At present Congress MP T Meinya represents the inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency, while independent Mani Cheranamei is the representative from the outer Manipur parliamentary seat.
