Dhakukhana (Assam): After Sonia Gandhi, it was the turn of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday to praise Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in taking Assam on the path of development in the last ten years. "I congratulate Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for bringing about rapid development in the state completely reversing the scenario that existed in the state ten years ago," Singh told a massive poll rally for Assam Culture and Sports Minister Bharat Chandra Narah here.

"There was total economic mismanagement and fiscal crisis with government employees not getting salaries, complete breakdown in law and order, development coming to a complete standstill and no initiative for the weaker sections of society," he said. "The situation is completely opposite now. Assam is very strong financially and the development rate has been the highest during Congress rule," he added.

New engineering and medical colleges have come up, agricultural and industrial development has been rapid with many corporate houses willing to invest creating employment opportunities in the state, the Prime Minister said. The good work taken up by the Congress in the last ten years has benefited all sections, he said.

The Prime Minister wished the people for forthcoming Rongali Bihu and hoped that the new year would bring peace and prosperity for the people. "We appeal to the people of Assam to give the party another chance to take the good work further," he said appealing to the people to vote for the Congress.
