EC issues notice to BJP president Amit Shah on Joy Banerjee’s remarks

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India on Tuesday issued a notice to Bharatiya Janata Party President Amit Shah seeking an explanation on party leader Joy Banerjee's comments on the poll panel.

The EC has asked the BJP President to give an explanation by September 25.

While addressing a rally in West Bengal, Banerjee had said that Election Commission of India was under his party's control.

"The Commission considers that the above-referred statement of Banerjee amounts to denigrating the integrity of the Election Commission as the statement can distort public perception about the neutrality, autonomy and independence of the Election Commission. The Commission has directed that the Bharatiya Janata Party may explain its position with regard to the above statement of Sh. Banerjee," the notice said.
