Karnataka Flag Committee Finalises Design, BJP Calls it ‘Election Gimmick
The flag is said to have yellow color on top, white in the middle and red at the bottom with the state emblem - coat of arms in the center of the white band.

Bengaluru: The committee constituted by the Karnataka government to design a flag for the state and look at its legal ramifications has finalised on a design. The design once approved by the state followed by the center will then be the official flag of the state.

"We had received few designs. We have chosen one of them. We have finalised it and will now be submitting it to the government," Manu Baligar, president, Kannada Sahitya Parishat and member of the committee told CNN News18.

The flag is said to have yellow color on top, white in the middle and red at the bottom with the state emblem - coat of arms in the center of the white band. However, the final design has not been published yet pending final decision from the government. Also, the design is likely to undergo minor changes as it goes through approvals.

"The flag has colors that our people are already acquainted with plus some changes," added Baligar. The BJP, however, termed this an election gimmick of the government.

"We are not opposing the state flag. But the timing. What was the Siddaramaiah government doing for the past four years? A state flag at this point is keeping elections in mind," said S Prakash, spokesperson, BJP.

It was in July last year that the government constituted the flag committee headed by Chakravarthy Mohan, Principal Secretary, Department of Kannada and Culture.

Currently, only the state of Jammu and Kashmir has a flag of its own.

Although unofficial, Karnataka's bi-coloured flag has been widely recognised and identified by the people as the state flag. The yellow and red coloured flag is also hoisted across the state on various occasions; most importantly, on the state's formation day - Kannada Rajyotsava on November 1.

However, the committee had decided to have changes in the official flag as the unofficial flag belonged to 'Kannada Paksha', founded by Kannada writer and activist Ma Ramamurthy who also conceived the flag in the 1960's and later used for his party.
