New Delhi: Delhi Congress president Ajay Maken on Wednesday resigned from his post, saying that he was taking responsibility for the party’s debacle in the MCD elections.

“We have made a reasonable comeback, from the 9% voter share that the party was left with after 2015 Assembly polls. But, I was hoping to do better. This is solely my responsibility which is why I’m resigning from my post,” said Maken.

The Congress leader added that he would not be taking up any post at least for the next year.

“I will be working like any other normal worker of the party. I am still inclined to the party’s ideology and will continue to work for the same,” he said.

"The party has nothing to do with it. It was his personal call," said Dikshit.

Earlier in the day, former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the party should have campaigned more aggressively.

"I'm not in the know how of what the party has in the pipeline now. The top brass in Congress will take a call on the same," she added.

Maken, in an interview to News18 before the polls, had said that the MCD elections were personally very important for him.

Senior leaders in the Delhi Congress had asked for Maken’s resignation, which he had quashed saying that Congress had always dealt with infighting, and it was something that former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit had also faced.

Days before the polls, Rachna Sachdeva, the Babarpur district president of Mahila Congress, had filed a complaint with the police accusing him, All India Mahila Congress president Shobha Oza and Pradesh Congress leader Neeta D’Souza of mental harassment, criminal intimidation and threat to life.
