My fight is against poverty not Tarun Gogoi, says PM Modi in Assam

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday sounded the poll bugle in Assam for the upcoming Assembly elections by targeting Taurn Gogoi's government.

Modi said, "You gave 60 years to Congress expecting good things, and I ask nothing but five years from you."

While addressing a rally at Tinsukia in Assam, Modi said his fight is against poverty and not against Tarun Gogoi. "Assam was one of the most prosperous states at the time of independence. Today, it is one of the poorest. There are many villages in Assam where don't even have electric poles," he said.

He said the situation in Assam will change if three things are done- "education to poorest, income to young people and medicines to old."

Modi said Assam is about to get a young capable chief minister in Sarbananda Sonowal. "Assam elections is a personal loss for me because I've to send one of my most capable ministers Sarbanand Sonowal for campaigning. But this is surely going to benefit Assam. There is one wave in Assam, one Anand in Assam and that is 'Sarbanand', he said.

The Prime Minister is also scheduled to address rallies at Rangapara and Karimganj on March 27. Assam will vote in two phases -- on April 4 and 11.

The BJP is contesting in 91 of 126 assembly constituencies of the state leaving 24 seats for Asom Gana Parishad and rest for Bodo People's Front and other smaller parties.
