Kolkata: The Communist Party India on Monday attacked Congress president Sonia Gandhi for her criticism of leaders of the other parties who want to become prime minister.
Taking on Sonia over her reported statement that it had become a fashion for political leaders of various parties to aspire to be prime minister, CPI general secretary AB Bardhan said: “It is strange. She is keen when her son aspires to be the PM and it is a fashion when others do so.”
“The prime minister's chair is not an heirloom,” added Bardhan.
Claiming the Congress was giving ‘love calls’ to the Left after the first two phases of the elections, he said, “If the Congress wants to support us, they themselves will have to take the decision.”
Mentioning about the popular support the Third Front has won in the first two phases of the ongoing polls, Bardhan said he is confident that the Front would do well both in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa.
“I think that the prophets of doom will be proved wrong both in Kerala and West Bengal, although we may lose a few seats here and there,” he said.
Asked whether the Indo-US nuclear deal would be scrapped if the Third Front came to power, Bardhan said: “It is an international deal and scrapping such a deal would have many ramifications. But we will certainly review it.”
