Kiccha Sudeep shared a post highlighting the sacrifice of Sangolli Rayanna.

On January 26, India celebrated its 75th Republic Day with enthusiasm and pomp. Although India gained independence from colonial rule in 1947, the Indian Constitution did not go into effect until 1950. Several celebrities took to social media to extend their best wishes to their fans as people across the country celebrated this special occasion at home, colleges, schools, or institutions. Kannada star Kiccha Sudeep also extended his wishes to his beloved fans on the occasion of Republic Day. Through his official X account (formally known as Twitter), he wrote a heartfelt message for his fans in his native language. What he said could be loosely translated as, “The auspicious day that brought all Indians under one constitution, the day on which the revolutionary Sangolli Rayanna sacrificed himself for the country. Happy Republic Day to all!”

Who is Sangolli Rayanna?

Renowned warrior Sangolli Rayanna came from Sangolli, Karnataka. He was born on August 15, 1798. As the head of the army in the Kingdom of Kittur, he served under the leadership of Rani Chennamma, one of the first female monarchs to overthrow British rule.

Rayanna battled the British East India Company until the end of his life. On January 26, 1831, Rayanna was executed by hanging from a Banyan tree about four kilometres from Nandagad in the Belgaum district. His last words to the British were, “You might hang me but remember, a Rayanna from every home of this country will be born until we get independence.”

Rayanna’s close associate planted a banyan sapling on his grave. Rayanna’s grave is 8 feet long instead of the usual 6 feet because she was taller than 7 feet. The tree is now fully grown and continues to stand today.

A movie was made on the life of Sangolli Rayanna. The film was titled Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna and it was released in 2012. The movie featured Darshan, Jaya Prada, Shashi Kumar, and Nikita Thukral. Kiccha Sudeep narrated the story. The movie was about Sangolli Rayanna, the army chief and freedom fighter of the Kingdom of Kittur, who revolts against the British in an attempt to drive them out of the country.

On the work front, Kiccha Sudeep is currently hosting Bigg Boss Kannada Season 10. The grand finale is scheduled to take place at 7:30 pm today, January 27 and tomorrow, January 28.
