Google unveiled a redesign of its iconic logo. This is the fifth such modification since the search engine giant started in 1998. Google last tweaked its logo in 2013. The new Google logo marks the biggest design change in the last 17 years.
The revamped logo, displayed as a Google Doodle on its homepage, spells 'Google' in a sans-serif typeface, similar to the one being used by Google's newly created holding company, Alphabet. The new typeface of the Google logo called "Product Sans" is meant to resemble the simple printing in a school book.
The logo refresh is also to better suit mobile devices that are supplanting desktop computers when it comes to modern Internet lifestyles.
Rolling out soon across all of Google's products, the redesign includes new elements such as a colourful mic to interact with when talking, tapping or typing. The compact version of the logo, used to identify most of its apps, bids farewell to the little blue "g" icon and replaces it with a uppercase "G" colored in blue, red, yellow and green to match the full logo.
The unveiling of the new logo came just weeks after a surprise reorganisation of Google under a newly formed parent company called Alphabet.
"We think we've taken the best of Google (simple, uncluttered, colourful, friendly), and recast it not just for the Google of today, but for the Google of the future," reads an official blog post by Tamar Yehoshua, VP, Product Management, and Bobby Nath, Director of User Experience.
The new brand identity "aims to make Google more accessible and useful to our users", the company said in a blog post explaining the logo.
The 17-year-old Internet company is keen to follow users of its online products onto new generations of Internet-linked devices such as smartphones, tablets and watches.
