New Delhi: Latest to enter the drone manufacturing industry is Sony Electronics who has partnered with Tokyo-based startup ZMP Inc. to create the unmanned aerial vehicles. It has earlier teamed up with the same company to make technology for driverless cars.
The gadget maker aims that the joint drone company, dubbed Aerosense, will offer services such as inspecting aged infrastructure and surveying land that is difficult to access.
Sony’s smartphone unit is providing resources for the drone venture. Its head, Hiroki Totoki says that the company is looking to explore new opportunities beyond its core consumer portfolio in enterprise markets. This would include Sony’s innovation in various technologies, including cameras and sensors, The Wall Street Journal notes.
Aerosense devices are likely to come with Sony image sensors, a core product that is used in Apple iPhones and Samsung Galaxy devices.
A Sony spokesman said Aerosense would sell services using drones but not the drones themselves.
Off lately, drones have become a hot field of research and investment for a lot of technology companies. E-commerce giant Amazon made headlines when it announced its plans to incorporate the remote controlled flying machines for delivering consumer orders. Google too has been researching the use of drones for various purposes.
