Reportedly priced at around Rs 2 lakh per frog, the poison dart frog boasts a deadly secret within its vibrant exterior. Despite its petite size, the frog harbours enough poison to kill ten people at once, making it one of the most poisonous creatures on Earth.

With bright colours, including yellow and black stripes or vivid green hues with orange spots, these frogs delight animal enthusiasts worldwide. Their vibrant hues further increase their value, placing them second in the world among the frogs.

With high demand from families in Europe, America and now Asia, these frogs are often trafficked from their native, Colombia. The main reason, as reported, is their unique colours that drive their illicit trade despite bans on import and export in many countries.

The reasons behind their demand are twofold. Firstly, their poison is harvested for medicinal purposes, serving as a potent ingredient in various medications. Additionally, their aesthetic appeal appeals to affluent individuals who seek to showcase these beautiful creatures in their homes as exotic pets.

While once primarily sought after in Western countries, the increasing demand has led to sightings of these frogs in Asian airports, signalling a global trend in their popularity. Despite their beauty, the poison dart frog’s demand comes with inherent risks, both in its toxicity and the implications of its illegal trade.
