In Japan, they refer to this lovely beach as Hokkaido Beach. The photo comes from the UNESCO-designated San’in Kaigan Global Geopark. It extends from Tottori’s western Hakuto Kaigan Coast to Kyoto’s eastern Kyogamisaki Cape in the west of the country. Numerous geological sites connected to the development of the Sea of Japan can be found scattered across this geopark. It also has geological features including valleys, dunes, sand bars, and volcanoes that resemble rias. Owing to its richness, this geopark is also home to uncommon plants such as Ranunculus nipponicus, Ciconia boyciana, and Pseudolysimachion ornatum.

At certain periods of the year, drift ice—frozen pieces of freshwater—is carried to the Hokkaido beach by strong winds from the distant Amur River. This is how the frozen features end up on the beach. Between late January and early February is when the majority of the snow and ice arrive at the shore, covering the water and beach with a mass of tiny bergs.

So for all the globetrotters who love visiting beaches, you know where to jet off to along with your knapsacks for your next adventure.
