Watch: Shopping Mall Floor Collapses In China, Internet Says ‘New Fear Unlocked’

In terrifying CCTV footage, a section of the floor of a popular shopping mall in China collapsed unexpectedly, causing a wave of alarm about public safety standards. As per ABC News, the customer was shopping on the second floor of a mall in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu province, when the incident was filmed by security cameras. The video was uploaded on Instagram shows a customer being swallowed up by the floor after stepping across the ‘weak’ tile. According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), a construction worker, who was working below, was also trapped by the rubble.

As per the clip, the mall manager stated that the collapse was caused by a faulty load-bearing wall. Soon after the incident, firefighters were informed and they immediately reached the spot. They rescued both the customer and the worker and both sustained minor injuries.

Meanwhile, concerned authorities have initiated an investigation into the reason for the collapse, hoping to determine if it was a single incident or indicative of larger safety flaws in the building and maintenance of public infrastructure.

The video was shared on Instagram on March 27. The video has raised widespread concern about public-space safety regulations.

“Am I the only one that’s noticing all these big holes suddenly opening up in the world consistently,” a user commented. Another wrote, “Oh nah. Something is in the air. Weird things are happening!” A user compared the footage to a game on the PlayStation and said, “This reminded me of playing Tomb Raider on the PlayStation and if you stepped on the tile everything comes falling.” While many termed it as a “new fear unlocked.”

Earlier this month, a big portion of Delhi’s Ambience Mall’s false ceiling collapsed, apparently during maintenance work. The incident did not result in any injuries. Except for a few employees and labourers, no one else was present inside the mall at the time of the incident. The incident at Ambience Mall took place at midnight.
