A man from the US Kentucky who became a household name after being arrested more than 1,300 times during his lifetime, died last weekend at the age of 74, according to the New York Post.
Henry Earl was known all over the US as “the world’s most arrested man”.
He had no family who could be contacted to attend his funeral ceremony when he was buried at Owenton Cemetery Thursday afternoon. The workers of the Owenton Healthcare and Rehabilitation Facility, where he spent the final years of his life were the only people present.
“He was a character, he had a wonderful sense of humour,” Ginny Ramsey, founder of Lexington’s Catholic Action Center, was quoted as saying by local news media outlet WLEX.
The reports by local news media outlets described him as a ‘beloved vagabond’. The Lexington Herald-Leader said that according to data kept by the Division of Community Corrections of Lexington Fayette Urban County Government since 1992, Henry Earl was busted roughly 1,300 times.
Media outlet the Smoking Gun, said Earl was arrested more than 1,500 times over five decades.
According to the Lexington Herald-Leader, Earl began drinking after his adopted mother died when he was 18 years old. He did not work a proper office job except for one time when he was employed at a motel as a busboy in 1969. He was fired from that job as well after he showed up drunk.
The report also said that he was first arrest in Fayette County in July 1970 for carrying a concealed weapon when he was 20 years old, since then, he has spent more than 6,000 days in jail.
He could not be featured live on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” in 2004 because he was in jail at that time.
His 1,000th arrest came in 2008 for alcohol intoxication when he was found passed out behind someone’s home. He entered a rehab programme but was arrested again after four months of sobriety.
He was last arrested for public intoxication in April 2017.
However, locals felt he was a charismatic person who was a free spirit at heart. He was well known in the Lexington community and students from the University of Kentucky college would give him drinks.
He also told people to call him “James Brown”.
“You couldn’t meet Henry Earl, and not love him. Henry Earl, he’ll never be forgotten,” said Ramsey.
