CHENNAI: On Thursday, in the wee hours of the morning, more than 350 police personnel were seen pedalling down the roads of Avadi at lightning speed. No, they were not close on the heels of a most wanted criminal. They were participating in a cyclothon conducted by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), which came up with this innovative idea to remember and honour the gallant deeds of their colleagues in connection with the 'Day of Valour', celebrated on April 9 every year. Delivering the presidential address, P Nagarajan, Deputy Inspector General of Police, CRPF said that cyclothons, marathons, blood donation camps and mass tree plantation were arranged not only to remember brave Indian CRPF men, but also to ensure that current CRPF personnel were made both socially aware and responsible. He said this would help foster the spirit of national integration. He motivated the CRPF personnel present at the event by saluting the bravery of the three policemen who won the Police Medal for Bravery for defending Kashmir's borders from terrorists. Nagarajan said that these men should serve as role models for all CRPF personnel, and that they should never hesitate to protect the nation with courage and spirit. The families of the 350 CRPF personnel also participated in this event held at the CRPF Camp in Avadi. Rajesh Kumar Meena, constable, won the first prize in the cyclothon.
